ASPHALT PAVEMENTS AND THE ROAD USER

The motorist and truck driver require road surfacings that are comfortable and safe to drive on. This paper reviews these requirements in engineering terms, including riding quality, tyre-road noise and vibrations, splash and spray, visibility and resistance to skidding. Where possible, appropriate standards are indicated, one of the aims being to develop methods of defining road maintenance needs in quantitative terms. An important element in all road maintenance programmes is to strengthen the road when required and the paper concludes with a brief review of the methods and criteria now being developed to determine when and by how much roads need to be strengthened. /Author/TRRL/
