DISTORTION IN WELDED ALUMINUM STRUCTURES
The study develops two analytical models for the prediction of strain resulting from elastic prestraining of a plate. Elastic prestraining is a powerful technique used to reduce angular distortion of a welded built-up section. A simple welded panel structure is used as a model to study problems of distortion which are inherent to welding aluminum. Three thicknesses of aluminum, 1/4, 3/16 and 1/8, are used for the panels. These three thicknesses are the ones most likely to exhibit distortion on the completion of fabrication. The experimental data for temperature of the plate at the gauge locations is compared with the one- dimensional prediction program's values. The effects of clamping on the residual stress levels is studied.
