THE EFFECT OF TOLERANCES AND THE APPLICABILITY OF NUMERICAL CONTROL IN MARINE PROPELLER MANUFACTURE

Assuming a satisfactory design of conventional propeller is given, an analysis of the effect of manufacturing tolerances in production is presented. The parameters in tolerance classification are presented and their effects are discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Trade- offs are considered according to the operating profile of the ship. In order to comply with the tolerance requirements, propeller manufacturing processes are described and a decision analysis is performed on the investment problem involved in the numerically-controlled machining system.
