IMPROVEMENT OF TRAFFIC FLOW TO REDUCE ENERGY USE

One of the socio-environmental benefits which can be realized from traffic operations improvement projects is fuel conservation. The amount of gasoline conserved has been used to estimate the potential saving from proposed traffic improvement projects. The information derived from this data may be used as additional justification for relatively low cost traffic operation improvement projects to the state and municipal decision makers. Other envieonmental objectives, such as smoother traffic flow, decreased noise and air pollution and improving an old and dilapidated location or street system, are obtainable through traffic engineering impovements.
