This digest contains a report prepared under TCRP Project J-5, "Legal Aspects of Transit and Intermodal Transportation Programs," for which the Transportation Research Board is the agency coordinating the research. The report, which has the same title as this digest and is authored by Mark McNulty, provides information on legislation, case law, studies, and other available resource material related to privacy issues in the public transportation industry. The report should be useful for attorneys, administrators, human relation officers, security personnel, supervisors, and all officials who confront these issues. It is organized as follows: (I) Introduction; (II) Invasion of Privacy Issues Generally; (III) Specific Privacy Issues; (IV) Conclusion; Appendix A - Possible Solutions: Fair Information Standards; and Appendix B - Rights and Obligations of Public Employers and Employees.
