NEW INSULATION TECHNIQUE INCREASES MOTOR OUTPUT 15 PERCENT

A new insulation technique developed by ASEA permits an increase of at least 15 percent in the output of high voltage AC motors and generators. The system employs enamelled copper conductor insulated by a wrapping of .08 mm. resin-coated Type 418 "NOMEX" M aramid and mica paper, a material developed by the Du Pont Company which is an intimate blend of 50 percent mica and 50 percent "NOMEX". A significant space saving in the conductor bundle is achieved by means of a new wrapping technique whereby only three sides of the conductor are completely covered. The conductors are stacked uniformly so that the partially covered face of one is always adjacent to the completely covered face of its neighbor. This permits more copper to be used without changing slot size or tooling. By this means, motor output can be increased by about one-seventh. Alternatively, smaller motors of comparable output can be built, or existing design uprated.
