SECOND CONTAINER TERMINAL FOR HALIFAX
The Port of Halifax is to get a second container terminal. The recent announcement by Nova Scotia's Minister of Development, Mr. George M. Mitchell, ended several months of speculation about the new facility. It is to be built at Fairview Cove at a cost of $44.3 million plus inflationary costs and interest charges. The facility will comprise one berth with two cranes and a roll on/roll off ramp. Work is to start immediately and the terminal should be completed by the end of 1979. A task force set up in March concluded that, based on a study of traffic projections, the Port of Halifax would need a new facility by 1979 or by 1980 if there is no traffic increase in 1976 over 1975. At present, the Port of Halifax handles 35 percent of all container business in eastern Canada and is the most intensely used facility in North America.
