METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES OF ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDIES: "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY"
Economic impact (EI) studies are widely undertaken, but seldom explained with precision. This paper attempts to clarify some of the methodological issues and provide a guide to researchers undertaking economic impact studies. Airports have been subject of many EI studies and are used as an example in this paper. The airport economy has been disaggregated into primary and secondary to account for different types of activities that take place. Primary linkages are defined as aviation related, and are usually located on-site or in the immediate vicinity of the airport; and secondary linkages encompass activities that are airport related, or for which their business is derived from air passengers.
