MASSIVE SEMI SPUDS ALASKAN COST
Many design features of the world's largest drilling rig are described. The Ocean Ranger, as the big semisubmersible is known, is designed primarily to allow deep water drilling under the most severe conditions. The Ranger's first well is a continental offshore stratigraphic test (COST) for Atlantic Richfield Co. The location is in 450 ft of water near Dutch Harbor, about 600 miles southwest of Anchorage. The Ocean Ranger can withstand 115-mph winds, 100-ft waves, and a 3-knot current simultaneously. It can drill at an 80 ft draft in water depths up to 1,500 ft.
