OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS OF PASSENGER CAR INTERIOR NOISE QUALITY AS A BASIS FOR BRAND SOUND DESIGN

The interior noise level of medium class passenger cars upwards has been reduced so far that the vehicle owner is hardly disturbed. In parallel, the subjective perceived interior noise quality becomes more and more important. This noise quality yields vital acoustic information about vehicle operating conditions and is additionally one factor enhancing the enjoyment of driving. Therefore interior noise quality becomes one important marketing aspect of passenger cars. Vehicle manufacturers take this into account in optimising the noise quality in parallel to the noise level. This optimisation is performed by use of test drivers listening to vehicle interior noise quality on the road and in the laboratory. From these listening sessions the status quo and target values are defined. Further development work is guided again by subjective judgements. This complex and time consuming procedure can be optimised if it is possible to define interior noise quality by measurement. In this report a new software tool is presented with which the interior noise quality of passenger cars can be objectively evaluated in real time, the AVL-Noise Quality Map. By use of this tool the time for noise quality evaluation can be reduced by more than a factor of 10, additionally the results obtained become more accurate. These objective noise quality results can be used for evaluation purpose during development, for benchmarking and for noise quality targets to be obtained by sound engineering. With this procedure the development process can be optimised and reduced considerably in time and cost. For the covering abstract see IRRD E104312.
