MOTOR CLEANING SYSTEM
Lower fuel consumption and reduced wear for diesel engines and gas turbines are two main advantages of the Rivenaes Motor Cleaning System (R-MCS) for internal cleaning, developed by Ivar Rivenaes A/S, Bergen. The system is suitable for both two-stroke and four-stroke diesels. Atomized nonflammable chemical fluid, injected into the charging air of the engine during normal running conditions, converts deposits like carbon, sulfur, atmospheric dirt, and vanadium oxide into a dry fine-grain powder, which is discharged with the exhaust gases. Regular use of the system keeps interior surfaces free from deposits and leaves an anticorrosive film on all the cleaned metal surfaces. The apparatus has been fitted to more than 500 ships of different types, and further development has now made the system available to the aviation industry. The R-MCS system is supplied in three different sizes which cover the whole range of diesels and gas turbines currently produced for marine and land- based applications. Installation of the Rivenaes system entails no more than fitting the special RMS spray nozzles to the engine. In a gas turbine, a nozzle is usually placed in the air intake trunking, but in diesel engines the number of nozzles required depends on the number of turbochargers. In some engines, such as high-power medium-speed diesels, an injection nozzle fitted on the exhaust side of the engine ensures that deposits do not build up in the turbine area. Frequency of injection depends on the state of cleanliness of the engine and its tendency to become fouled in certain areas. Preparation for injection takes only a few minutes, and no one need be in attendance during the brief injection period. RMC liquid is not toxic and will not harm the skin of anybody handling it.
