MOBILITY DEMANDS OF URBAN FIELDS
The principal purpose of this article is to promote and popularize both the characterization and descriptor of the term "urban field." Urban field refers to urbanization over a large space, and encapsulates what is happening today in most large communities of North America. Drivers are commuting slightly longer distances but it is taking them less time. More people have been commuting to suburban job locations than to central downtown business districts for some time. Shopping malls are the contemporary points of congregation and social interaction. The voluntary dispersal of residences over metropolitan space is generating a condition called "sprawl" with the decentralization of work and service facilities over the same large territory. This article describes this trend and its positive and negative aspects within the context of the urban field and how it marks a major departure from the urban pattern of the industrial period.
