IMSA LEVEL II TRAFFIC SIGNAL UPDATE: CHAPTER 4--VEHICLE DETECTION
This article employs a series of figures to illustrate a potential vehicle detection layout for a side street approach with a right turn "slip lane." A premature gap-out problem can arise with this detection layout under certain conditions. This premature gap-out increases motorist delay and fosters more complaints due to being stranded for another cycle by this unnecessary pause or gap-out. The problem is sometimes difficult to detect by a troubleshooter who must be on-site at the right time to see the problem occur and recognize the cause. Solutions to this problematic vehicle detection scenario are discussed.
