DEVELOPMENT OF A DRIVING SIMULATOR. PART REPORT: HYBRID COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR THE LONGITUDINAL DYNAMICS OF THE VEHICLE

The present report is an introductory description of some hybrid computer programs that might be parts of a driving simulator under development at the national road and traffic research institute in Sweden. The main purpose of this stage has been to gain experience in real-time hybrid programming for the driving simulator and to develop a model which provides signals necessary for the simulator sound system. Inputs to the model are provided by the throttle, the clutch pedal, the gear lever, and the brake pedal. For the starting procedure a starting key or button is also necessary. A brief description of the computer hardware is followed by a user's manual for these programs. The manual is designed for easy handling of the program system without requiring special knowledge of the program itself. The presented real-time models of engine, transmission, and brakes will probably be sufficiently detailed for the complete driving simulator. The remaining parts of the vehicle model are extremely simplified with longitudinal motion only and linear tyre characteristics. These parts and the low speed behaviour will be adjusted later, but at present they fulfil the needs for the sound system development. /TRRL/
