LOGISTICS ISSUES IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY: THE PRACTITIONERS' PERSPECTIVE

In 1995, the U.S. chemical industry, through its five major associations, developed a vision of where the industry needs to be by the year 2020 to maintain its global competitiveness. Relative to the supply chain, Vision 2020's principal finding was that the supply chain was a discipline that had received less attention than other disciplines, such as science and production. Vision 2020 also identified the challenges that were facing the industry in 1995. These challenges were global supply capabilities, information processing among supply chain partners, reduction of trade restrictions, standardization of regulations, improved transportation efficiency, and environmental health and safety. This discussion document features supply chain practitioners from some of the world's largest chemical companies: BP Amoco, MA Hanna Resin Distribution, and GATX Terminals Corporation. They have examined for their respective firms the changing nature of supply chain management within the context of the Vision 2020 challenges and opportunities. This paper presents each practitioner's experiences and lessons learned on integrating logistics strategies into the overall supply chain and corporate strategy, meeting increasing performance expectations through logistics and supply chain initiatives, executing a successful logistics strategy in a dynamic business environment, and developing the professional skills needed to survive and prosper in a rapidly changing industry.
