TRENCHERS DIG IN
Though trenchless technology is gaining in use, trenching equipment continues to be responsible for most of the world's underground construction installations. Trenching equipment falls into three general categories: compact walk-along trenchers, medium-size riding models, and large multipurpose machines. Compact walk-along models are the easiest units to use. There is a good selection of self-propelled models in the 10- to 18-hp class. Medium-size riding trenchers are in the 20- to 35-hp class. They dig a deeper trench and more of it per hour than handlebar machines. They also have backfill blades that speed restoration once material is placed in the ground. Larger, more powerful trenchers in the 40- to 150-hp class dig a wider, deeper trench and can be equipped for trenching through paved surfaces and frozen ground and other special applications. A variety of attachments extend the capabilities of this class of equipment. Most frequently used are vibratory plows, combination vibratory plow and offset trencher components, utility backhoes, and specialized digging components such as disc trenching assemblies, which cut through concrete and frozen ground. This size equipment is doing much of the work to install fiber optic cable for the information superhighway and is also used to install primary telecommunications lines, pipe for water and natural gas distribution systems, electrical cable distribution cable, and electrical power lines to power freeway lighting and urban traffic signal systems. Proper maintenance extends the life of a trencher.
