IMPACT DESIGN OF CRASH CUSHIONS FOR NON-STATIONARY BARRIERS

This paper presents two methods which may be used to design non-stationary traffic barriers such as sign trucks with crash cushion attachments. The two methods are based on barrier resistance charts and graphs which plot acceleration versus time. Simple equations for both methods have been derived and are presented along with example problems. The results are compared with more complex computer simulations to illustrate the usefulness of the equations. In particular, an equation for a moveable barrier resistance chart is presented derived from the general differential equation. Usage of the chart is discussed and shown in examples. The acceleration versus time method is presented as sets of simple equations, based on two (or more) steps of constant crushing force. The method can be applied in this form for design purposes. Feasibility of the methods with regard to angular impacts is briefly discussed by means of a few computer simulation results. /Author/
