TESTING OF PERLEY BRIDGE

The report describes the load test which was conducted on Perley Bridge. The test was required to determine the load-carrying capacity of the bridge which had become suspect after recent failure of one of its components. Perley Bridge, which is a 2284-foot (696 m) long bridge of 34 assorted spans in steel, is the only land crossing over the Ottawa River between Montreal and Ottawa. The report records the test data and includes a comparison with the analytical results and the conclusion drawn. The details of the instrumentation layout are given along with the data acquisition systems which were used to record the strains and deflections during the temperature studies and during the static and dynamic load tests. The suggested repairs are based on the conclusions drawn from the test. It is expected that after such repairs the bridge will be able to safely carry the modern vehicular traffic. /Author/
