AXIALLY LOADED COLUMN BASE PLATES
Results are presented for an experimental and analytical study of steel column base plates subject to axial loads. A total of 19 tests of steel plates placed on concrete cubes and with load applied only to the central portion of the plate have demonstrated that the present AISC Specification approach is conservative. Since a rigorous analytical treatment would be intractable due to the nonlinear material properties and the interaction between the plate and concrete at ultimate load, an empirical method is presented which is readily suitable for design. Comparisons are made with other analytical approaches, and the test results from other investigations are compared with the proposed method. /Author/
