TRIP GENERATION

The main purpose of this report is to provide traffic and transportation engineers with a single guide on trip generation rates for all land uses and building types. The report will be updated from time to time to include additional land uses and building types, rate differences, and changes in travel patterns. Trip generation rates have been developed for the average weekday, Saturday and Sunday for the peak hours of the generator and of adjacent street traffic. Since variations in rates for the same land use or building type exist, great care must be taken in their use. The data in the report represent weighted averages of those collected in the U.S. since 1966. They were obtained from local government agencies, consulting engineers, universities, and technical reports. Field data were collected with automatic counters varying from one weekday to seven days, counting vehicular traffic entering and exiting a site. The generation rate analyses were performed by coding the data from each source document and determining, by use of computer, the related variables, average trip generation rates and regression equations. A complete listing is given of the generation rates for the following land uses: Port and Terminal; Industrial/Agricultural; Residential; Lodging; Recreational; Institution; Medical; Office; Retail; Services.
