ANALYSIS OF THE PROPOSED LNG TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM FOR NORTHERN ALASKAN NATURAL GAS

Delivery of the gas directly to nationwide markets by a pipeline transmission system has been proposed by a consortium of U.S. and Canadian companies. The Alaskan segment of the system would be built and operated by Alaskan Arctic Gas Pipeline Company (Alaskan Arctic). An alternate mode of delivery has been proposed by El Paso Alaska Company (El Paso) and this overall transportation scheme is described. The gas would be transported by pipeline to the Aouth Coast of Alaska where it would be liquefied. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) would be shipped to the U.S. West Coast in large LNG carriers where it would be regasified and distributed by pipeline to western markets. Distribution to midwestern and eastern markets would be accomplished by gas exchange. The analysis has been directed to four principal areas; namely, transportation cost, fuel consumption, reliability, and timing. Submissions field with the Federal Power Commission (FPC) have served as the basis for the analysis.
