DRIVING TRANSTAR : COMMON TAGS AS REAL-TIME TRAFFIC PROBES IN HOUSTON
This article describes how the TranStar traffic management system obtains an accurate assessment of traffic flow by using tagged vehicles as traffic probes in the Houston area. More than 350,000 vehicles use the tags, and the traffic flow information retrieved from the tags can even be found on the Internet. Plans are now in place for a program to be initiated in which appropriately tagged vehicles will be able to use High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.
