Comments are made on the maintenance of buses, and possible improvements and savings in this field. The nature and cost of maintenance depend on several factors. The type of equipment used influences maintenance efficiency. The selection of the model and quality of the vehicle, and the way it was built play an important role; automatic devices enable some operations to be reduced to a minimum or even eliminated; standardization of vehicles and selection of a limited number of models, if possible in cooperation with other transport forms, enable the number of spares to be cut down, the mechanics to follow a specialization course, the prices to be reduced, etc. The selection of maintenance tools can also lead to substantial savings in labour, and workshop and garage equipment. /TRRL/
