ADVANCED VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEMS (AVCS) FOR PRODUCTIVITY ENHANCEMENT : "IT'S NOT JUST FOR SAFETY ANYMORE"
In this paper, the authors emphasize the need for a greater emphasis on the productivity enhancements that can be gained through the use of Advanced Vehicle Control Systems (AVCS) technologies. Several application areas are used as examples of these benefits. The authors first review AVCS benefits, including safety and productivity. This is followed by examples of near term applications in specific transit systems, opportunities in commercial vehicle operations, and opportunities with road maintenance vehicles. The authors conclude with a discussion of the need for case studies and cooperative deployments.
