HANDICAPPED PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN VEHICLES IN TRAFFIC

HANDIKAPPADE I TRAKIKEN-FOERFLYTTNING MED EGET

In recent years, the handicapped have been given increased technical, economic and legal facilities to use their own motorised vehicles outside their homes. This has been due to the work of different authorities, but this effort has often lacked coordination. The object of this project was to review the situation and to pinpoint problems which have not yet been solved satisfactorily. Interviews have been carried out among 113 handicapped people who have outdoor electric wheelchairs, mopeds and cars. It was found that the greatest problems for the seriously handicapped arise in connection with longer journeys, since they can only manipulate wheelchairs which have a short range. For all handicapped, getting in and out of the vehicle is the greatest obstacle. Restrictions in relation to grants for cars put these out of the reach of many handicapped people. It is recommended that new types of vehicles be developed for those confined to a wheelchair. Many shortcomings in the home, the testing of aids and driving instruction have also been noted. /TRRL/
