TRANSAMERICA TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR: TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY. FEASIBILITY STUDY. TASK C REPORT: 21ST CENTURY OPPORTUNITIES

The Transamerica Transportation Corridor (TTC) study is a general analysis for future coast-to-coast surface transportation systems. In the broadest terms, the study relates future transportation needs, potential technologies, and possible locations for a long-range surface transportation corridor and then critiques applicable financial and implementation strategies. Task C on 21st Century Opportunities identifies and evaluates new transportation technologies against the conditions summarized in the Task B Existing Conditions report. The TTC--Transportation Corridor 279750--has been defined as a coast-to-coast corridor located between Interstate 40 (I-40) on the south and I-70 on the north. The focus of Task C is on mode, technology, and function. A variety of transportation system alternatives are candidates for the TTC. These include a conventional highway, a highway using new and emerging technologies, guideways of various types, various intermodal and multimodal treatments, and various types of shared or joint use. In addition, there are various corridor and local access options. The purpose of this task is to set some broad boundaries about the kinds of transportation concepts that should be considered so that time and resources are not wasted looking at alternatives that are inappropriate. Five alternatives are recommended for more in-depth and corridor-specific analyses: conventional highway (interstate standards), conventional highway (interstate) and superior railroad, superhighway, advanced tollway, and superhighway plus very high speed fixed guideway.
