A broad survey of the problems involved in highway design is given. The following parts are treated 1. Landscape surrounding the road, space shape and colour, optical guidance. 2. Alignment, different alignment methods, change of gradient, design of road bends, vertical and horizontal. 3. Connection between the road and the surrounding terrain, embankments and cuttings, rest areas etc. 4. Bridges and retaining walls, design and layout. 5. Perspective, construction and analysis, computer animated pictures. 6. Costs involved in aesthetics of highway design. /TRRL/
