PERSONAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
This thesis focuses on a portable navigation system that provides verbal location information to the visually impaired. The system uses a laptop computer which incorporates synthesized voice, geographic information systems (GIS) map database, positioning using Global Positioning System (GPS), and an alternative navigation system designed to take over when the GPS position information is not available. A pedometer is used by the alternative navigation system to determine distance travelled, while a digital compass determines direction.
