PROACTIVE DRIVING SAFETY EVALUATION : AN EVALUATION OF AN AUTOMATED TRAVELER INFORMATION SYSTEM AND INVESTIGATION OF HAZARD ANALYSIS DATA

This dissertation focuses on components. The first deals with the design, conduct, and analysis of results from a safety evaluation of using an in-vehicle navigation product known as ADVANCE Mobile Navigation Assistant (MNA). Data obtained while driving with the ADVANCE MNA was compared with data collected from driving with conventional methods of navigation. The second phase of the research compares hazard analysis data obtained during the above safety evaluation with data collected during the TravTek Camera Car Study in which the effectiveness of a similar advanced traveler information system (ATIS) product. These project involved the use of a hazard analysis technique to assess the relative safety of driving with in- vehicle ATIS products compared with conventional means of navigation. The final portion of this research presents a comparative analysis of hazard analysis technique data collected during this project and a previous study. This analysis focuses on determining the consistency of the methodology from application to application and to understand the relationships between driver errors, near misses, and accidents.
