THE ROLE OF INDEPENDENT TANKER OWNERS

Independent owners provide the major portion of the world tanker and combined carrier fleets. In 1973 most independent owners were fixing vessels at very high rates, and embarking on major fleet expansion programs. The sudden reversal in the tanker market following the Arab/Israeli war in October 1973 has already posed severe financial problems for certain individual tanker owners. More generally, the prospect of a continued and prolonged depression in the tanker market has brought into question the scale of future independent tanker operations and the long-term role of independent owners. It is the purpose of this particular study to consider these developments, together with moves to support independent owners, and to outline what is likely to be the future role of the independents. A major part of this study is devoted to an in-depth examination of the fleets and operations of 25 selected major independent owners.
