SHIPS WITH LARGE HATCH OPENINGS

This report gives an account of calculations and full-scale measurements of stresses and deformations caused by static torsional loads and of wave-induced motions and stresses on a 14,700 dwt containership, MS Antonia Johnson. The measured and calculated stresses, deformations and motions showed reasonable agreement. The total longitudinal wave-induced stress is made up of a vertical bending, a horizontal bending and a torsional component. The measured total stress has been subdivided in these three components. The results of the investigation show that the vertical bending stress component is dominant in the major part of the ship's length in all wave directions. In the forward part of the ship the torsional component has been shown to be of great importance.
