TECHNO-ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF VARIOUS TYPES OF PROPULSION SYSTEMS

The Author discusses the results of a comparison study of Diesel and steam-turbine propulsion for a 138,500-dwt tanker. The main technical parameters used in this study were performance, operation, maintenance and repair, and habitability. Studies of life cycle costs have also been made. These indicate that reheat steam turbine machinery offers the best economy for tankers of some 80,000 dwt and above, giving a saving of some 7% for the largest vessels.
