NEW TECHNO-ECONOMIC SCENARIOS AND OPTIMUM STEAM CYCLES

The economic recession in the industrial countries has, together with the new energy situation, reduced the demand for shipping services and led to a tonnage surplus especially in the tanker market. Increased fuel prices have also led to new market attitudes towards the selection of ship types, ship sizes, ship speeds and propulsion machinery. The solution to these problems proposed in this paper, which examines a number of alternative steam cycles, is the simple reheat cycle (5 CR) which offers high operational flexibility and good partial load characteristics. Such a cycle with its favourable overall economy, should prove attractive to shipowners for all ship types with power requirements above 10 MW.
