STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA PRICE INDEX OF STATE HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION COSTS

The index for the second half of 1975 is 146.0 which is 3.2 points or 2.1 percent below the previous half. Four (portland cement concrete pavement, Class A concrete, reinforcing steel and structural steel) of the eight items show a decrease in cost while the remaining items (unclassified excavation, option borrow, asphalt concrete, gravel cushion - subbase and base) show an increase. Items showing the greatest decrease, based on percent, are Class "A" concrete (-13.2) and structural steel (- 10.8). Average contract unit prices for 1957 - 1975 are tabulated and the price index for state highway construction costs are listed. The number and size of highway projects, total contract amount and average number of bidders are also indicated in a table.
