MANUAL ON HOT-MIX ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVING

This manual contains two specifications for asphaltic concrete,--one termed dense graded aggregate type and the other graded aggregate type. These specifications represent two different philosophies of design, and both are presented so that the Engineer may select the one which best fits his requirements form the standpoints of available aggregates, climatic conditions, and equipment. Properly constructed, both specifications will provide durable pavements, capable of carrying unlimited traffic on primary highways. The fundamental difference between the two types of pavements lies in the manner of specifying aggregate gradation, and the relative emphasis placed on density of the compacted mixture. In the dense graded aggregate type (A-2-a), aggregate gradations for the mix are specified on the basis of percent passing and retained on each of the intermediate sieves, which insures good continuity of gradation. In the graded aggregate type (A-2-b), aggregate gradations for the mix are specified on the basis of total per cent passing each sieve.
