FIELD CONSOLIDATION OF VARVED CLAY, REPORT NO. 5: LABORATORY SHEAR STRENGTH
A series of unconsolidated - undrained triaxial shear tests were run on samples with the varves at angles of 0, 30, 45, 60 and 70 deg to the axis of the sample as well as a series of isotropically consolidated - undrained triaxial shear tests on samples with the varves at angles of 0, 45, and 90 deg. to the axis. The parameters measured by the triaxial tests are detailed, and the samples used in the tests are described. The details are given of the compression and extension testing. The study found that the unconsolidated - undrained strength behavior of the varved clay in the unconsolidated state is anisotropic and depends on the orientation of the major principal stress to the varves. The variation of strength along a failure surface can be substantial; therefore further research is required to optimize foundation design for fills and structures in this soil.
