RESIDENTIAL LOCATION AND DAILY MOBILITY PATTERNS: A SWEDISH CASE STUDY OF HOUSEHOLDS WITH CHILDREN. IN: SOCIAL CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

The purpose of the paper is to examine whether residential location is still a significant factor in total distance traveled and in the content of daily mobility patterns. The two primary aims are: to study how total distances traveled by car differ between households living in the coutryside and in towns; to examine the conflict between the demands for mobility and the demands for stationarity in an increasingly functionally organized society. The following hypotheses were formulated: households in the city travel more for recreational purposes than do those in rural areas; children's activities pose greater constraints on how parents' time budgets in rural areas than in the city; in particular, women in rural areas have less time available for their own recreational trips.
