ASSESSING THE DRIVING PERFORMANCE OF AN ELDERLY POPULATION BY USING A DRIVING SIMULATOR
This paper presents part of the findings in research to assess driving performance of elderly drivers. Occupational therapists need to assess the driving ability of older persons, but this involves a certain level of risk to the driver and other road users. A driving simulator was used to administer a test to subjects. Six dependent variables, designated performance indicators, were selected for comparison between groups of drivers. Data were analysed to identify which indicators would be useful in differentiating the groups. The study concluded that some indicators could be used for this purpose and the simulator is seen as a practicable tool in assessment. However, over a third of the subjects suffered a form of motion sickness during or after the assessment.
