THE POLITICS OF ACCESSIBLE PUBLIC TRANSPORT. THE AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE: A PERSONAL JOURNEY

This paper traces and summarises the Australian experience since the first formal moves began to influence the introduction of fully accessible public transport in 1992. It sets these moves against the international framework, including United Nations declarations to which Australia is a signatory and then links these with current Australian legislation, and explains the historical and political context which is the key fundamental to understanding the Australian background to this universal issue. The author details some of his tradecraft learned as a journalist, gives examples showing how strategic political decisions can and have been influenced by small groups of committed people using knowledge gained, and summarizes a major list of some specific political DO's and DON'Ts. They include lessons that may help other countries to cut future corners.
