CAN TRANSPORT HELP DELIVER THE GOVERNMENT'S HOUSING VISION?

In the UK, the Sustainable Communities plan presents a new approach to housing provision, which integrates transport and infrastructure from the start. Reducing the need to travel by car is a key priority of the plan. Four key growth areas in the southeast of England have been identified: South Midlands, Ashford in Kent, the London-Stansted-Cambridge corridor and the Thames Gateway. The Thames Gateway has been reported to have the potential to accommodate an additional 200,000 homes above levels already indicated in regional planning guidance. The focus will be on high-density housing. Possible transport schemes for the Thames Gateway include Crossrail Line 1 to Canary Wharf and Stratford, four new Thames crossings, a network of bus-based transit schemes, and new road schemes. The funding for new transport schemes is discussed.
