INVENTING THE CAR OF THE FUTURE
The motor industry is conducting research to develop efficient, low pollutant vehicles using alternative energy sources. The European Vehicle Passive Safety Network is conducting data on road accidents and the types of injuries sustained to promote research into materials and external and internal vehicle design. The Adase thematic platform links the principal projects involved in developing advanced driving aid systems. Partners include DaimlerChrysler, Jaguar, PSA, Clepa and Cofiroute. Projects include the Carsense project to improve auto cruise control systems, the Euclide project to examine the interaction between a long-range radar and infrared camera to help drivers in conditions of reduced visibility, and the Roadsense project to assess man/vehicle interactions. Projects to reduce emissions include the CO2perate project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the New Diesel Engines and New Diesel Fuels to study the impact of fuel properties on new high-pressure direct-injection diesel engines, the Premtech projects to improve intelligent internal combustion engines. Three thematic networks are working on anti-noise issues: RATIN on road/tyre interactions, Visper on reducing noise caused by vehicle transmissions and exhausts, and AVL List. DaimlerChrysler is developing a fuel cell-powered vehicle (Necar 4 prototype). PSA Peugeot-Citroen and Renault, BMW, Opel and Honda are also working on fuel cell-powered vehicles.
