EUROPE'S RAILWAYS AND THE ALLIANCE OPTION
In the 1960s, the possibility of setting up a single joint railway company for the European Community was discussed. Moves towards interoperability and open access for companies to the European network are discussed. Cooperation between railway companies is considered with reference to the EU Commission's principle of intramodal competition. Entrepreneurial cooperation between railway companies is illustrated by examples within Germany, Switzerland, and France. The EU transport policy to internationalise (Europeanise) the railways is scheduled to be applied to freight traffic by 2007/8. At first this is set to run via alliances.
