AN IMPROVED APPROACH TO COMPARISON OF INVESTMENT OPTIONS BY RAILWAY NETWORKS
A method for comparing investment options was developed using an approach developed from a model for investment in increasing the capacity of a railway line. The integrated approach is targeted towards two levels: line level and network level. The line model includes train running simulation, elimination of freight trains in favour of passenger traffic, timetable verification, basic calculations for each investment option and calculation of capacity limits. The network model extends the line model to the network. The approach takes account of the number of trains, throughput in tonnes, capacity reserves, costs, net present value and internal rate of return. The final results allow a classified list of investment options to be produced. The approach was applied to the Transport System of Slovenia. For the covering abstract see ITRD E117504.
