THE INTERNATIONALISATION OF FREIGHT TRANSPORT MARKETS IS COMPELLING THE EUROPEAN RAILWAYS TO REALIGN THEMSELVES
The European railways' share of the modal split in the freight transport market is less than 10% and is declining. There is a need for European railways to realign themselves and to position their products as a distinctive element within logistics process chains. Trends in the logistics market, the economic power and logistic capability of rail products are discussed. The necessity for co-operation with other carriers is emphasised. The opportunities and risks deriving from political factors and legislation are discussed. The main tasks facing railways were identified as the consolidation of their core business, customer-focus product offering, internationalisation of business, and additional value-added through logistics gearing.
