1970 TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS: TRIP GENERATION

The purpose of this report is to present and to analyze trip generation data as observed in the Chicago and Northwestern Indiana region during 1970 to 1971. Trip generation is examined by land use, floor space use, households, and persons. Analysis of trip generation due to land use is based on six broad categories: Residential Land; Manufacturing Land; Commercial Land; Public Building Land; Public Open Space Land; and Transportation-Communications-Utilities-Mining Land. The intensity with which a parcel of land is used is examined by determining the actual amount of floor space devoted to a use. Floor space data for areas comprising the city of Chicago and several urban down town centers is analyzed and compared with previous collected data household trip generation was found to be related to characteristics of the household, such as number of people income, employment, number of cars, density of the area, and age of household head. Analysis of trip generation by persons concludes that trip making decline as people form households and have children, increases as children grew older and more mobile, and declines again with old age.
