TRANSIT VEHICLES FOR 21ST CENTURY ROADS

State Transit of NSW, Australia's largest bus and ferry service operator, has been expanding its Sydney bus fleet to the point where this year at least 25% will be CNG powered, wheelchair accessible, and air conditioned. The future of urban transit is with high capacity, low floor vehicles. The changing bus fleet has implications for road authorities and local governments beyond the present retro-fitting issues. This paper looks at the fleet characteristics both public submissions and government policy are advocating, and State Transit's experience with new vehicles. Specific topics covered are environmental performance, vehicle impact on the cost of service, the future of minibuses as urban transit vehicles, and high capacity vehicles. Fleet performance analysis and customer response to vehicles in surveys from State Transit's experience are described, along with recent emissions testing. The interaction with the road environment is also discussed in terms of common problems and the future for barrier-free public transport.
