AN URBAN AND REGIONAL DESIGN APPROACH TO ROADS AND TRANSPORT - LESSONS OF THE RTA NSW

This paper presents the relevance of urban and regional design to the success of road projects, by drawing on the experience of the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales (RTA). It sets out to demonstrate the value that can be added through an urban and regional design approach, in terms of functionality, appropriateness to context, improvements to the public domain and design quality, to both the projects themselves and the environments through which they pass. First, it discusses renewed interest around the world in the urban design of infrastructure projects, and summarises the urban and regional design outcomes being sought by the RTA. Second, it uncovers the design principles, processes and benefits related to three types of projects: new motorways, the upgrade of existing arterials and new bus only transitways. Finally, the paper draws out the key procedural and substantive lessons that have been learnt in each case and across these project types.
