CRAWL BEFORE YOU WALK: INCREASING PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AROUND SCHOOLS

There is no point encouraging more walking to school if the correct infrastructure is not in place. Transport SA through its Safe Routes to School program has achieved some excellent results in increasing safety around schools. This has been done in partnership with the Council, the school and its community. Traffic engineering improvements have been put in place to assist all road users but the main aim was to make it safe around the school for the child pedestrians. It must be recognised that almost all primary school children leaving school grounds are pedestrians, and if they are not pedestrians they are cyclists. To complement the infrastructure improvements the paper will also highlight the important role of educating children and their parents to complete the whole safety package. This integrated approach will encourage more children to walk to school in the longer term. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E208097.
