ADVANCED VIDEO SYSTEMS FOR ITS
In this paper, the author discusses the impact of the new MPEGII television standard on Intelligent Transportation Systems, including a discussion of the required architectural changes, the benefits derived, and benefit cost issues. The author describes how existing ITS can transition an older technology into modern, digital video systems without having a major impact on operations. In addition, a specific approach is described for accommodating the transition of a convention analog video system to a fully digital video subsystem of ITS. The approach also facilitates the use of a variety of CCTV cameras with a common system architecture and with a system that is capable of supporting the deployment of new CCTV technology without having an impact on the traffic operations center architecture.
