SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY : THE MARKET FOR PREMIUM AIR TRAVEL APPEARS TO OFFER TANTALIZING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE COMPANY WITH THE RIGHT FORMULA

With the pending demise of the Concorde, some investors are looking at the premium flying niche to fill the gap between mixed-class network airlines and private jets. New tools may make it easier to succeed where others have failed. The Internet makes it much cheaper and more efficient to sell tickets and find customers. The biggest and most- established all-premium service is a venture of Lufthansa and Privatair, based in Geneva. Manufacturers are now offering corporate versions of commercial airliners that have true intercontinental range. The new service is operating as a partnership between the large carrier and the luxury service provider in order to maintain a route and possibly generate new traffic. Another premise uses small jets for shorter flights with a regional jet configured for greater comfort. Indigo operates between Chicago and NYC offering a guaranteed first- class seat for the same price as a network carrier's unrestricted fare. Another startup is going after the air taxi and air limousine service. Business jets could be better utilized to fill in the gaps, too, but it would require major overhaul and coordination of how fleets are allocated.
